2 Years

Writing sometimes happens when we’re saying goodbye to, or closing a specific chapter of, something. But today, I’m writing to renew a commitment, celebrate a period of time, and keep those memories and current feelings documented on here for me to go back to one day. My dad once told me “your will and determination are strong, go on and fulfill your dreams.” Since then, I found home on airplanes, traveling between countries and across oceans. Never settling, and always on the move. So it’s only fitting that some of my most important moments have happened while traveling.   In September 2019, I bought a last minute ticket on an Amtrak train from New York City to Washington D.C. The train was packed full of people. It was slightly hot, and everyone was rushing to get in.  When I finally found my aisle seat, I wrote a reply text message that said: “Mukatafa is a priority for me. It isn’t just an “if”, it’s a definite maybe.”   I sent it to the person who would soon bec...

Bicycles, Ugly Balls, and Oranges in Strategy

They say that “culture eats strategy for breakfast.” I wasn’t really sure what this meant when I first heard it. Then, gradually, when the CEO of the company where I work explained it, it turned to imply that the culture of your company always determines success regardless of how effective your strategy may be. Our CEO also believes in the power of certain things that power our culture like riding broken bicycles, grooming ugly balls, and turning apple into oranges.    Now, here’s the thing, I’ve never written about my career on this public journal of mine, but I feel like sharing something special through this piece.    I was going through pictures on my phone of the past month at work. They were all random pictures and videos taken at different times; selfies from field visits, videos from the car commuting between meetings, and pictures from the office documenting what I believe to be important moments for us to look back and reflect on. In every picture, there wa...

When Destiney Meets Satisfaction

As we reflect on our own lives, one can’t help but wonder which moments along the way made him who he is. Are we a collection of events and decisions that shape us?  Earlier this week I remembered my first attempt at writing a fiction book. I think I was 14 years old back then, and my goal was to finish writing 10,000 words within a few months of pure fiction literature and gradually expand on it.  The story was inspired by a family trip I had in Switzerland.  We were near the Alps, and our driver told us a story about a family whose father would go fishing everyday for lunch.  He would climb a hill to a nearby lake, and every evening he’d come back for supper with one fish that his family would have for dinner; never more and never less.  One day, a tourist saw him, and told him what an investment it would be if he actually caught more fish and started selling it to all the tourists who came by the area.   The man simply replied by saying...

Five People

I woke up to a phone call from my mother.  She wished me a happy birthday as I heard my brothers in the background singing, and my nephew crying.  It was 3 pm in Saudi Arabia and 7 am in the United States.  They knew that is the time I wake up, so they made sure that my alarm was extra special today.  They promised me a late birthday party.  But honestly, their love and presence even through a phone call was all I could ask for.  Right before the end of the call, my mom said: "You were born on a rainy Sunday.  But that was 19 years ago. Now go out and enjoy what this year has to offer you." "What does the first day of this new year have in store for me?" I replied, but she laughed gently and left me there wondering.  I wondered in my small room corner surrounded by pictures and memories with some classical music playing.  I kept on wondering as I read the news, and went through Facebook and Twitter.  Then I almost spilled my hot lig...

"Glocal" at the United Nations Youth Assembly

Those who dream, will definitely achieve.  The efforts we put into chasing our goals will be recognized.  Our faith in God, and those long nights praying with so much hope in our hearts.  The taste of accomplishment, that happiness, the laughter, oh and those tears of pure joy.  Standing up for the right, and fighting for the good.  We were all born great, but at the end of the day, it is up to us to realize that greatness and use it proactively.  Nobody’s better than the other, we are made different so we can come together and join those differences together for our own good.  If we’re the same, then competing will never get us anywhere, because “team work makes the dream work” according to a great wise friend of mine.  Working hand by hand to reach the finish line will get us further and further in life.  This past week, I had the honor to be the Saudi Delegate to the United Nations Youth Assembly, and this is the story of how this week t...

The Airport Floor's Lesson

My strong shivers which ran through every part of my body.  My acing bones against that hard floor.  My head suffering to find a comfortable spot on my backpack.  My head, lost in a million thought.  "Why am I doing this?  Am I seriously going to sleep?  Did I just miss an announcement?!"  I laid there on the floor of the Charlotte International Airport from 10 pm until 4 am.  Rolling around, shivering, thinking, and truthfully: on the verge of breaking down and crying. I hugged my friends goodbye by the airport's United Airlines gate.  In my head, I was ready to check-in my suitcase, eat something, and then sleep in the lounge which I was planning to pay for instead of a hotel.  Yet little did I know about what was going to happen.  I walked into United's desk, and there was nobody. It actually smelled like soap and looked shiny, so I figured that they just cleaned the desk and went on a break.  But everyone was cleaning th...

A Step Forward

Fried fish on top of white rice.  My family gathered around this last meal, and I was personally enjoying the dish which started and ended my summer trip to Saudi.  Everyone around the table asked me about the date of my return trip back to the States at the start of the summer, as if we were all trying to reassure ourselves that we still have plenty of time together.  More time for more fish, more sweet tea with mi...
